It’s raining, the drying rack comes out, and the laundry ends up in front of the TV like every winter. Almost everyone does this reflexively without thinking twice. Yet this habit transforms the living room into a humidity generator, with consequences that first appear on the walls, then affect the health of the entire home.

A typical laundry drying releases between 2 and 5 liters of water into the surrounding air. In a closed living space with poor ventilation, this vapor has nowhere to go. It deposits on cold walls, around windows, behind furniture pushed against walls, and creates the perfect conditions for mold within just a few days.

Why Air-Drying Laundry in the Living Room Is a Misleading Solution

The living room seems practical: it’s heated, spacious, and you spend time there. But that’s exactly what causes the problem. Air stagnates there, ventilation often comes down to a window you rarely open in winter, and humidity levels climb with no system to evacuate the excess.

When humid air meets a cold surface, like an exterior wall or window, it reaches its dew point. Vapor transforms into condensation and persists. This phenomenon, repeated week after week, eventually establishes mold in corners, behind curtains, or under baseboards. Indoor air becomes heavier, sometimes loaded with volatile organic compounds linked to laundry detergent and fabric softener residues that evaporate along with the water.

The Ventilated Bathroom: The Only Room That Truly Evacuates Humidity

The answer comes down to one word: the bathroom. Provided it has a ventilation system or a window, it’s the only room in the home designed to manage large volumes of water vapor. It already serves to evacuate moisture from showers and baths, so it can absorb laundry moisture without throwing the rest of the house off balance.

Unlike the living room, this space features permanent or programmed humidity extraction that continuously draws humid air and expels it outdoors. Laundry dries almost as quickly there as anywhere else, but without vapor circulating through bedrooms or living areas. This mechanism, not the size of the room, makes all the difference.

Three Essential Steps to Dry Laundry Without Mold Risk

Ventilate Continuously, With Exhaust Fan or Cracked Window

An exhaust fan running constantly renews the air and prevents vapor from building up. If the bathroom doesn’t have one, a slightly open window during the entire drying period serves the same purpose, even in winter. The goal isn’t to cool the room, but to create constant air circulation that sweeps away humidity as it forms.

Never Place the Drying Rack Against a Wall

A drying rack pressed against a wall creates a pocket of stagnant air between the laundry and the wall. That’s exactly where condensation settles first, invisible for several weeks before black spots appear. Simply leaving at least 30 centimeters of space allows air to circulate freely around the laundry and evacuate moisture outward rather than toward cold surfaces.

Ambient temperature also plays a role: a room that’s too cold slows drying and extends exposure time to humidity. Keeping the bathroom at a stable temperature speeds up evaporation without excessive heating.

The Costly Mistake: Drying in a Closed Bedroom

Many think they’re doing the right thing by isolating damp laundry in an unused bedroom with the door shut. It’s the opposite approach needed: without ventilation, humidity concentrates even faster, and cold walls in a poorly heated room become prime real estate for mold. A ventilated bathroom beats a confined bedroom any day.

The Dehumidifier: When Ventilation Isn’t Enough

In a poorly insulated home, without an effective ventilation system or in a humid region, natural ventilation sometimes can’t absorb all the excess water released by drying laundry. A dehumidifier becomes a useful complement, especially in winter when opening windows for long periods causes temperatures to drop.

Placed near the drying rack, it captures humidity directly at the source before it spreads to other rooms. This also reduces drying time, which limits the duration the indoor air remains laden with vapor. For households that regularly use a clothes dryer, the issue is different: as long as it’s properly vented or of the condensation type with a regularly emptied reservoir, it avoids most of these problems.
